Dark Twinkles allows mallet percussion to shine in a piece all about the glockenspiel (bells). The original idea for this piece was to provide some great starting literature featuring mallet percussion, a section not often given the spotlight in beginning band. As it grew, the harmonies became an integral part of the vision and took what was once a light and Christmasy tune and turned it into something significantly more ominous. Thus, Dark Twinkles was born. Educator's Note The great thing about Dark Twinkles is how it scales to the ensemble needs. The rhythms are extremely minimal. Large portions of the piece are repeated, and the band is very often in unison rhythm. The piece can work extremely well with more advanced instruments like french horn, oboe, bass clarinet, ETC, but it also works fantastically with just FL, CLAR, ASAX, TBN, TPT, and PERC.
