BlowBack - 2021

BlowBack refers to the unintended consequences of an espionage mission. This piece involved a very different writing process from my normal approach. Typically, I identify a purpose or theme early on. With this, the idea was born when I notated the shower-thought of a bass line riff and just kept going.
The riff I am referring to is very similar to the one that appears in the final work, and it quickly became my musical hook. At the time, I had no clue where the music was taking me, I just went with it. At about the 1 minute mark, I showed the piece to several of my friends and family and got the universal feedback that it reminded them of a 1960s Espionage movie. It was my "aha" moment. With a theme in mind, I jumped back into the music. At the end of it all, I still had no title to go with the work, just an idea. After a couple of days of thought, I turned to my thesaurus (the internet) to research espionage. I didn't have to look far. BlowBack was a perfect title that referred to the subject matter and also reflected the unintended nature in which the piece was written. |
