Make Room For Joy - 2022
PROGRAM NOTE
Make Room For Joy is a simple message, but one I am not always good at taking to heart. Filling my days to the brim and running myself ragged is a way of life and one that often leaves me feeling more exhausted than fulfilled, and I know I’m not alone in that. Making room to feel emotions in our hearts and minds is a weakness that my generation is trying to overcome. Finding happiness, positivity & exuberance is a complex multifaceted journey that I won’t pretend to have the answers to for anyone, but I know that the first step for me involves making an active choice. Setting aside a little time each day to revel in whatever joyous things came my way has made all the difference. Make Room For Joy embodies the relentless pursuit for positive outlook and optimism. From the bouncy opening themes to the slower ballad sections to the bombastic finish, this piece embodies the standard I strive to uphold. PERFORMANCE NOTES In the percussion, the chimes should be placed where both the Marimba player and the Temple Blocks Player have easy access. Both players utilize them at some point in the work. There is also an optional Accelerando from 202 to the end. I went back and forth on whether I wanted it and ultimately landed on preferring the version without the Accel, but feel free to experiment with it. And finally, the effect of this piece is strongly dependent on tempo. Better to take the piece at a slightly slower speed to begin with than to let it slow down gradually. |
